About Golden Age Fretted Instruments
Some of you may recognize my name
— John Reynolds — from my time as the Vintage Instrument Manager for a well-known Staten Island vintage fretted instrument dealer. In January of 1999, after 8-1/2 years and with some regret, I gave notice, so that I would be free to start Golden Age Fretted Instruments, LLC.
My goals here are to provide the same level of fine service which I was accustomed to supplying in my previous position, while offering a great selection of new guitars by some of today’s finest builders, clean, original vintage collectible guitars and used utility instruments.
Golden Age’s focus has really shifted in recent years.
While I still love clean and original vintage guitars, I have really developed a keen appreciation for modern hand crafted instruments. There has never been a time when more quality guitars are being built by individual luthiers than there are today – a real “Golden Age” of fretted instruments. There is something magical about observing the creative processes of the builders and watching their work evolve. I owe a debt of gratitude to all the luthiers I have met and from whom I have learned so much.
Also, I’m very pleased to be the exclusive North American distributor for the fine custom guitars of Spanish luthier Josep Melo, whose online catalogue you’ll find herein.
So, take a look around, and please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have!

Pete Becker - Stringed Instrument Repairs
Pete has been repairing stringed instruments professionally for over 25 years. He was mentored by Joe Blumette at Rondo Music in the late 1980’s. Several years later he took a position at Mandolin Brothers in their repair department. Flip Scipio was in charge of the shop in those days and he taught Pete a great deal about the art of repair, especially in regards to vintage instruments. He spent the next 10 years repairing and restoring guitars, mandolins, banjos and resonator instruments for the Bros.. Leroy Aiello was also helpful to him during those years and helped him with his first neck reset on a vintage Martin. After leaving Mandolin Brothers, Pete started his own shop, Hell Mountain studios, at his home in NJ. “When John opened Golden Age in Westfield he asked me to help with some repair work. I was honored to do so and have been with the store ever since”.
